Moving to and working on Skye has and always will be one of the best decisions I’ve made in life. However, there are plenty of sacrifices that need to be made to live here. One of these is the lack of options. Be it plumbers, electricians, builders merchants etc. I personally have to pay for someone to come over from Inverness to fit carpets/vinyl. But, it’s manageable because it can be dealt with. However, when it comes to electricity it’s a different story all together. Whilst we pay the highest per Kw charge in the UK we can’t monitor our usage like anyone else within the UK. And one of the best ways to save money on electricity, is to know where it’s all going.
Technology like Smart Meters don’t work here because of the lack of connectivity. Whilst we all have broadband (even if it’s slow) Smart Meters don’t work off this. They work via the cellular network which is sketchy at best. So, much like everything else, you have to do it yourself.
This little WiFi enabled clamp fits inside your breaker box and the clamp clamps around your power cable; preferably before your meter. This monitors your usage in real time and sends the data to the Shelly app or to your Home Assistant installation.
What’s more, if your electricity provider has an open API your usage can also be aligned with your tariff including peak and off peak costs.
Whilst the initial outlay is on the expensive side, know what you are using can help you make the right decisions in regards to your energy usage. To learn more please do get in touch and we can discuss the options.
