Starlink Installation Options:

Choosing What's Right for Your Highland PropertY

If you’re considering Starlink for your Highland or Island property, you now have options. That can’t be said often up here.

Starlink offers a free standard installation, and we offer professional installations designed specifically for West Coast conditions. Neither approach is wrong – but understanding the differences helps you make the right choice for your location and needs.

Starlink’s free installation service gets you connected quickly using their standard kit:

  • Painted steel mounting brackets
  • Pre-terminated cable with moulded connectors
  • Standard positioning based on signal requirements
  • Basic setup to get you online

For many locations, particularly in more sheltered areas, this is a perfectly viable option that gets the job done.

It’s worth noting what Starlink’s free installation actually covers:

  • Single-story homes only – the free installation is limited to basic mounts on single-story properties
  • Additional costs for non-standard properties – homes with 2+ stories, specific roofing types, or in wind-regulated areas will incur extra charges
  • Travel and time charges – installations requiring extra travel or on-site time may have additional fees based on location and distance
  • Service may be refused – the installer can decline service after reviewing your property

For most Highland and Island properties, particularly those in exposed coastal locations, you’re likely looking at additional costs anyway – and there’s no guarantee the installer will take on more challenging sites.

Our installations are specifically designed for the properties and conditions that fall outside Starlink’s standard service – multi-story buildings, exposed locations, wind-affected areas, and the kind of challenging sites we deal with routinely across the Highlands.

Professional Installation for Highland Conditions

Our installations are designed around one simple principle: the West Coast environment is unforgiving, and your internet infrastructure needs to match it.

We use heavy-duty galvanised brackets and bolts instead of painted steel. In our salt air, constant moisture, and exposed locations, galvanised steel provides the corrosion resistance needed for long-term reliability. Standard painted brackets will eventually corrode, particularly around bolt holes and mounting points – fine in sheltered lowland areas, but a risk in Highland coastal environments.

My installations might not look as pretty as Starlink’s standard kit, but they’re built to last.

Minimal Impact, Professional Finish

Starlink’s cable comes with large moulded connectors requiring a 16mm hole through your wall to pass them through. Instead, w run quality Cat6 cable first, needing only an 8mm hole, then terminate it professionally inside with wall-mounted faceplates.

Smaller holes mean:

  • Less structural impact on your building
  • Easier, more effective weatherproofing
  • A clean, professional appearance inside and out

I also designed and 3D print custom components that fit into the wall entry point to prevent water and wind ingress – a solution I developed myself after being unable to find anything suitable for Highland conditions.

Strategic Site Assessment

Every property is different. We assess your specific location to position the dish for optimal performance while protecting against wind damage. Sometimes that means mounting high where there’s natural shelter; other times it means mounting low to keep the dish out of the worst winds. Experience with hundreds of Highland installations means we know what works in your conditions.

If you need connectivity throughout a larger property, in a separate cabin or pod, or across multiple buildings, we can design and install a custom network extension. This isn’t an afterthought – it’s planned into the installation from the start.

Who Benefits from Professional Installation?

Consider a professional installation if:

  • You’re in an exposed coastal location with high winds and salt air
  • You’re running a business or holiday let where reliable connectivity is critical
  • Internet downtime costs you money through lost bookings or productivity
  • You plan to stay long-term and want infrastructure that lasts 10+ years
  • You need coverage across multiple buildings or throughout a larger property
  • You care about the longevity and reliability of your installation

The free installation gets you online. A professional installation gives you infrastructure designed for Highland conditions.

Neither is wrong – it depends on your location, your needs, and how critical reliable connectivity is to your life or livelihood. We’re happy to discuss your specific situation and help you decide which approach makes sense for you.
